What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement?
Bioidentical hormone therapy uses compounds that have the exact chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by our body. The bioidentical hormones copy nature. As we age, our hormone levels decline which is responsible for symptoms and diseases associated with midlife crisis or andropause (low testosterone) or perimenopause/menopause. Our choices are: 1) no treatment and suffer with the symptoms of declining hormones or 2) take synthetic drugs proven to have potential serious side effects or 3) treat the underlying hormone deficiency and give back what nature has taken away (this is the bioidentical hormone option).
Hormones are responsible for controlling the delicate biochemical balance in our bodies. They move our bodies through each phase of our lives, from infancy through puberty, reproduction, and old age. They prepare our bodies to fight, to flee, and to mate, and they are responsible for all of our metabolic functions, including energy use, fat burning, mood changes and digestion. Hormones are produced by our cells in very small quantities, and trace amounts can have significant effects.
What is the difference between bio-identical and synthetic hormones?
Bioidentical replacement hormones were first used to provide relief from the symptoms of menopause in the 1930’s. The first synthetic, or mass-produced, hormones were developed in the 1940’s. The synthetic hormones, which are derived from horse urine, do not match the molecular structure of the hormones produced by our bodies. Synthetic hormones can produce unpleasant side effects such as nausea, fluid retention, and dizziness. Studies in the 1970’s showed that patented synthetic hormones were linked to cancer and most recently, the Women’s Health Initiative (2002) showed that the synthetic hormones were linked to increased risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots and breast cancer.
Bioidentical hormones are extracted from natural sources such plants, including soybeans and yams. Their molecular structure is identical to that of the hormones produced within our own bodies and research studies have shown that they are a safer option than the synthetic hormones. They are custom-tailored to suit your specific hormone replacement needs, which allows you to receive individualized treatment. I work with accredited compounding pharmacies that develop the bioidentical hormones into creams, pills and pellets.
